KITA started as an ordinary furniture shop. We sold mattresses from a number of brands and pitched them from the brochures we were given, which meant we could quote a specification and a price but could not honestly say whether a mattress would suit the person in front of us.
That changed when we cut open our own display mattresses to find out what was actually inside them. What we found did not match what we had been repeating. The four letters of our name are what we rebuilt the business around afterwards.
K is for knowledge
A mattress is one of the few things people buy for a decade without being told how it is made. Most of what is available to a buyer is vocabulary rather than information: zone counts, spring counts, layer counts, fabric names.
So we write the explanations we wanted when we were selling from brochures. Why zoning is mostly a marketing device, how a 1000 coil unit is advertised as 5000 springs, and why thickness is the most quoted and least useful number on a spec sheet.
I is for inside out
The cover is the part you can see and the part that matters least. What holds you up is underneath it, which is why we would rather show you a cross section than a swatch.
It is also why we are careful about what goes inside. Rebond foam, which is shredded offcuts held together with a large amount of synthetic glue, is common, cheap and sold as something else.
T is for truth
Anything we can have measured by somebody else, we do. KITA Solid Foam was tested for durability against EN 1957:2012 by TÜV Rheinland (Guangdong) Ltd, under a 1400 N load for 60,000 strokes, taken as ten years of daily eight hour use. It lost 0.16 inch of height, recorded on the certificate as 3.9 mm. The full figures, and how to match them to the certificate, are in what the testing actually measured.
Truth also means saying what we do not know. Firmness preference is personal and no laboratory can test it for you, which is why we would rather you came and lay on the range than took our word for it.
A is for assurance
Most bed brands advertise a warranty of 15 to 25 years. A warranty covers manufacturing defects, often pro-rated, and a mattress that simply wears out is not a defect.
We write a guarantee instead. If a non-spring mattress sags more than 1 inch, or a spring mattress more than 1.5 inches, we replace it one to one at no cost. A tested loss of 0.16 inch against a 1 inch threshold is the reason we can put it in those terms.
What we make
KITA Solid Foam is a blend of 20% lightweight aggregate and 80% high density polyurethane foam. The point of it is that firm does not have to mean heavy: a single 5 inch mattress weighs 7kg, which is light enough to flip, rotate and change the sheets on without help.
That matters more than it sounds for anyone buying for an older sleeper, and for landlords furnishing a property they are not the one sleeping in.
